Nunavut Fishing Trip

My good friend Sheldon Schroeder invited me to go up north to the island of Victoria in the Canadian territory of Nunavut to do a little fishing.

Sheldon had done this trip a couple of years previous with his wife and a couple of friends but this time his wife was unable to go so I gladly went in her place.

Sheldon and his friend Peter both have C-185's on amphibious floats which are the ideal aircraft for the job as nothing else has the range or the usefull load to carry the required gear and to haul out our limit of the elusive Arctic Char ( unless you are fortunate enough to have your own Caravan).

As both Sheldon and Peter are based out of Fort McMurray (200nm from Rose Field), I flew the old Stinson up there the day prior to our departure.

We left around 0645 and our first leg took us to Yellowknife NWT where we took on fuel. The first leg was a little over three hours over some pretty remote areas. We saw a large herd of wild Wood Bison as we flew over Wood Buffalo National Park. Our second leg ( just over four hours) took us over some fantastic scenery on our way to Cambridge Bay where after we landed we had to bend over and take the exceedingly high priced fuel surcharges and taxi fare into town to get our fishing licences.

The final leg took us into Secret Lake where we set up camp and had a bite to eat. Then the fishing began. As it is light 24 hours a day this time of year we fished until midnight and caught some nice ones. It was unusually flat with no trees so you could see for miles. Small herds of Muskox were always in sight from camp. The wind was just enough to keep the bugs away but not too much that I was cold. The next day we had our limit by 2 in the afternoon and it was decided to head home the next day as we had full coolers. The trip home was great with tailwinds all the way.

It was a long way ( over 2000 nm ) for a day of fishing but well worth it!

Thanks to Sheldon and Peter and his wife Char for a great couple of days and to Kim for not going and for the good grub and hospitality in McMurray.
